Do you have a secret talent that can bring wealth?

 

On our #FinanciallyFocusedMONEYTALK podcast, we asked Mrs. Terry how to find your unfair advantage which is that special thing that creates wealth.  The idea found at Entreprenuer.com suggests that no one can see or appreciate your talent, skills, or knowledge — until you do first. How do we find our unfair advantage and convert that to wealth? 

Mrs. Terry explains:

Your ‘unfair’ advantage is first of all very fair – meaning we all have access to our own unique talents and strengths, so from that point-of-view, the playing field is quite level. Some of us however, have either not yet had the opportunity to discover what these are, or we haven’t taken the time to explore and exploit them!

So, the first thing we have to do is to ask ourselves the following questions to clearly identify and distinguish between our passions, skills and talents, as they are different:

  1. What do I really love doing so much that I would be willing to pay someone to let me do it (of course assuming I have the money to do so!) – these are your passions!

 

  1. What skills do I have? This is about the knowledge (both theory and applied) that I have learnt over various periods of my life – for example, like sales or project management.

 

  1. What do you do that requires little thought and you do it naturally? These are your talents and could be very different from what you love to do and your skills! “Talents” can be connected with our personality ‘types’ – for example, we may be very extroverted and have a natural way of approaching and speaking to people or perhaps we are naturally inclined to work alone and do research work. These are part of our ‘talent’ package which we can harness.

In order to fully benefit from all the aspects of ourselves that make us unique, we need to mesh our passions, skills and talents with market needs. Research various market niches that are in alignment with these and market yourself or your products/services to fulfill those needs.

It is very important to note that finding enjoyment in the work that you do is critical in switching on the motivation-reward drive. Without turning on this switch, life becomes much more tiring and stressful and it becomes increasingly difficult to sustain productivity. Decision-making and goal setting become challenging and our creative problem solving skills are at an al-time low

Speaking of productivity, did you know that one of the easiest ways to boost your own productivity and that of your team is to ensure that you are doing work that you love and you have a talent for, at least 80% of the time!

How does this work? Well, when you focus on doing the things that you are good at and enjoy, you will get into your flow zone quickly and, if you are allowed to stay there by virtue of your job role, you then make much better use of your time, talent and effort! By doing this, you automatically create higher value for yourself and your company and you increase trust because when you are playing to your talents and strengths you will deliver the results instead of finding excuses.

Moreover, can you imagine what it would be like if everyone in your organization or team was doing the same thing? Well, you will 10 x your output and everyone will be buzzing while they are doing it!
